Offering kids a multicultural exposure to the arts and hand on arts programs and art classes in music, visual arts, painting...) I included this video because I thought it was interesting to see a school dedicated to multicultural art in it's many forms.
(Description: The Guerrilla Girls recent visit to Acadia University was their first major exhibit in the Maritimes. The group, founded 25 years ago brings attention in a radical way to the inequities in the art world.)
I remember first hearing about the Guerrilla Girls in my freshman art history class and feeling a great deal of respect for these women. I also found their artistic signage and posters very appealing, not to mention effective. They not only promote female artists as many people believe but also of artists of a variety of cultures and ethnicity.

In this short clip Houston's children and their families tell you a little more about our city in English, Farsi, Chinese...) These are the children we will teach in the future. Houston is just an example. Imagine the variations of expression you would see in a class room that appropriately reflected the times.
Judy Chicago's Dinner Party opens at the Brooklyn Museum
Judy Chicago is easily one of the most recognizable female artists in recent history. She is most famous for her piece, pictured beside the video, The Dinner Party. To see that a piece with the intent of appropriately acknowledging female artists in art history to gain such wide spread fame and recognition is progressive to say the least. However it is still a long way from being recognized by male artists working at the same time as Chicago.

video shows Bosnian, Russian, American, Vietnamese,
and Montagnard elders creating 30"x40" art panels showcasing their native cultures.) This video was of particular interest to me because not only did it showcase individuals from a diverse range of cultures but they were older members of society. The first anthropology class I took had an entire unit centered on cultures from across the globe and how the elderly are cared for and viewed by the younger population. It was surprising that the US, unlike many other cultures, does not show a visible degree of respect and appreciation for the elderly. It is the elderly who hold the stories of the past, the wisdom of their ancestors, and the experience of living into old age. Parody on a bunch of feel-good teacher movies, but mainly Freedom Writers stands out. Hilarious. From MADTV.
I included this clip because even though it is intended to be humorous, it is a sad but accurate representation of many of the stereotypes created by society and exaggerated by Hollywood only reinforcing prior misconceptions. (Description: Faith Ringgold on Female and Black Artists.)
I recently did a presentation on the work and life of artist, Faith Ringgold for my senior thesis class. In my research I found out that my own prior understanding of who she was as an artist could not have been further from the truth. She stands for more than just equal rights for women and blacks but for people of variations of what a human is. She wrote a story about the world going color blind, to read it...CLICK HERE .
